Here at North Park Nursery, we like to carry products that are a little off the beaten path. Sure, we’ve got your staples: your geraniums, tomatoes and succulents. There are plants that are just so useful they’ve become ubiquitous for good reasons. But all of the staff here at the nursery have a passion for things that are “different” – my particular interest, for example, is the bizarre native flora of Australia.
There are a lot of reasons to love Australian plants. Australia is a Mediterranean climate, just like Southern California, so the plants are well adapted to our conditions here in San Diego: full-sun loving, drought-tolerant, infertile soil and coastal environments.
Because Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, it also means that plants native to the continent bloom at opposite times of the year from ours. Just as much in the California garden is fading, Australian natives are bursting into life. This makes using them an excellent and assured choice for year-round color and interest.
Further, Australian natives have some of the strangest, most bizarre blooms of any plants around. What more could you want in a plant than aexotic, winter-blooming and low-maintenance? And good news! North Park Nursery carries many of the varieties listed here, and is happy to special order anything you can’t find right away.
Here is a brief list of some of the best, most popular and easiest to find selections of native Australian plants for the San Diego area:
- Westringia – Coast Rosemary
- Anigozanthos – Kangaroo Paw
- Correa – Australian Bluebells
- Eremophila – Emu Bush
- Chamaelaucium – Waxflower
- Callistemon – Bottlebrush
